Behold these brand spanking new pics of the Toshiba SmartPad. This is the first tablet pictures we have seen with ports including HDMI, USB, and a memory card reader of some sort. A tablet with HMDI is great news for content creators wanting to use their tablet as an HD presentation tool. Other rumored specs include a 10″ screen, Android OS, and an Nvidia Tegra platform 2. More details as they are leaked!

Time Warner’s CEO Jeff Bewkes hinted that he wants to allow his tree killing print subscribers to automatically have subscriptions to the corresponding better looking tablet versions. These include tablet magazines such as Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune. There is no plan on when this will exactly happen but Bewkes stated that the “key to it all” is to allow all subscribers to get content “over all broadband devices as soon as possible.” If this happens, there will be added incentive for more users to use the tablet version, which in turn, could lead to a larger subscriber base of the digital magazines and lead to more innovation. Although Time Warner has yet to produce an example of Living Art such as a motion cover, they do plan on it, and we haven’t given up on them yet.

William Hereford has recently released a mock-up for a digital cooking magazine that he hopes to someday see on the iPad. In this concept, a new and creative way to present a cooking recipe is combined with subtle visuals that don’t distract and help aid the cook if needed. William also envisions the ability to swipe through each cooking step on the iPad, which would be a great idea for those using the magazine in their kitchen. Try out this new living art experience by turning up the soothing French music and cook yourself some roasted duck! [Kitsune Noir]

Our friend Jesse Rosten, a filmmaker based out of Northern California, has created an iPad shopping concept that involves motion models. It is a nicely executed example of how a conventional print catalog could play in motion.

We are really excited to see more things like this, especially if they involve some sort of a narrative. Imagine a living fashion catalog that pulls you into a compelling story while you’re shopping. Anyone want to see a Victoria’s Secret version?

Together with co-directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung, we produced a motion magazine cover and feature spread for Viv Mag – an all digital magazine, which would allow us to create content that will be able to live on the iPad and other tablet devices where digital magazines can live.
